Chia seeds originate from South America and have been used as a food for thousands of years by the Mayans and Aztecs. Recently chia seeds have been labelled a complete super food as they are one of the richest plant sources of Omega 3, dietary fibre and protein. These nutrient dense seeds also contain a wide range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids and fatty acids.
Mix 1 tablespoon into foods such as cereals, porridge, yoghurt, smoothies, sauces and salad dressings. Alternatively they can be added to water or juice, when added to liquids the chia seeds will swell and form a gel like substance.
How to Use Chia Seeds
- Sprinkle over cereal or porridge
- Add to fruit and yoghurt
- Mix into smoothies and juices – will make the drink thicken
- Use to thicken sauces or casseroles
- Mix into baking – muffins, slices etc
- Mix into salad dressings – will naturally thicken them
- Add 1 tablespoon to a glass of water - the seeds will swell and form a gel like substance.
