Propolis can be considered as one of nature’s miracle; it is a pure and organic substance collected by bees from tree buds and other botanical sources as part of the defence system for their hives.
Propolis is a resinous mixture where bees use their own enzymes to re-metabolise it into pollen. Bees utilise and spread this substance on the inner and outer walls of their hives to protect and guard the hive from germs, keeping bees healthy and free from diseases in their crowded environment. It is known to be a natural steriling agent. The colour of propolis varies depending on its botanical source, the most common being dark brown. The status of propolis also changes with different ambient temperatures. It can be sticky at and above 20oC and becomes hard and brittle at lower temperatures.
Propolis contains a complex blend of biochemical elements including beeswax, essential oils, bio-flavonoids and vitamin A, B, C and E. Propolis has been used as an natural healing agent for almost 5000 years. This is because of its rich source in bioflavonoids, a powerful antioxidant. Propolis considered a 100% natural antiseptic, extremely effective in fighting bacterial and fungal disease; it is also very well known for boosting immunity, and improves the maintenance of general well-being.
