Causes of tooth discolouration - certain foods and beverages can cause teeth to become discoloured. These include coffee, tea and wine. Smoking also causes teeth to become discoloured.

Types of teeth stains:

Extrinsic Stains - an extrinsic tooth stain is a stain on the outer part of the tooth. These stains make their home on your enamel, which is the layer that protects the softer part of the tooth (dentine) underneath. Enamel comes into contact with everything you eat or drink and can adsorb some of the pigment over time, causing a stain.
Intrinsic Stains - intrinsic stains happen when pigments become incorporated in the enamel structure. Dentine is naturally darker and more yellow in colour than enamel. Dentine is more visible when enamel is thinned or worn down from abrasion, which can result from hard toothbrushing; or erosion, which can occur from the ingestion of acidic foods and drinks amongst other things.
Teeth whitening treatments - there are many at-home treatment options available including using a whitening toothpaste, mouthwash or whitening pen. Colgate Optic White toothpastes contain hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide works by removing extrinsic and intrinsic stains. Other whitening toothpastes use high cleaning silica, which helps to remove surface stains on the outer layer of the teeth.

Directions For Use

Brush thoroughly at least twice a day or as directed by your dental professional. Some people may experience tooth sensitivity or gum discomfort when using whitening products. This discomfort is temporary and not harmful. If you experience more than mild tooth sensitivity, stop use and consult your dentist.

My teeth were quite stained and dull looking even after brushing. I have used Colgate Optic white renewal vibrant toothpaste for 3 weeks now. Twice a day I would brush with my electric toothbrush and use this product. I think my teeth are about 3 shades whiter and definitely have a shine to them too. I will continue to buy this product, use it twice daily and recommend anyone wanting whiter and brighter teeth to buy it and give it a go. All you have to lose is grey and dull teeth.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Using Colgate Optic White Renewal Vibrant Clean Teeth Whitening toothpaste over 4 weeks saw a significant colour change in my smile. I have been using it morning and night. It has a minty aftertaste and using it with an electric brush made my teeth appear whiter. My breathe also felt fresh. The toothpaste itself it nicely branded and it comes in a clear box, giving it a more luxurious look and feel. I will definitely be repurchasing as it's a great tool to have your smile look white and bright without using any harsh whitening products.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Kimbakiki2 from Nice Toothpaste but Didn't Whiten I was really keen to give this product a good try so I committed to using it twice a day for a month solid. I even took pictures of before & after! The toothpaste itself was nice to use & tasted great, left a really nice, fresh taste in my mouth & my teeth felt really clean. Also it didn't make my teeth sensitive, which was a bit of a concern for me. But sadly after 1 month of constant use, there wasn't even the slightest difference in the colour of my teeth! I was rather disappointed because if there was 'some' change, I was considering changing from my regular toothpaste, but sadly not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Pris9 from Visible whitening I have been using the Colgate Optic White Renewal for two months and it was at the 1.5 month mark that I started to notice a big difference in the whiteness of my teeth. For me this has definately lived up removing 10 years of yellow stains. I´m really happy with the results. Also I´m really impressed that this has not aggravated my teeth or gums in any way and I haven´t expereinced any sensitivity which I sometimes do with whitening toothpastes. This toothpaste is a little pricey but I will continue to buy because it is one of the few where I have seen results.

I found the taste pleasant and it did leave my teeth and mouth with a fresh and clean feel, however it didn't really make much difference to the colour or look of my teeth. The one thing that I didn't like was it actually seemed a bit abrasive especially on the gumline. I would rate it a good toothpaste but I don't think it lived up to its claims.

First impressions were that I disliked the taste. After the first week though, I got used to it. My teeth and mouth seemed refreshingly clean afterwards. I certainly noticed a difference. One thing I wasn't so happy about is that my mouth seemed constantly dry. That was a little uncomfortable. Overall I would use this product again to get that extra clean. Don't think I could use it continuously.

I found it less abrasive than other brands available in the store. I used this toothpaste with an electric toothbrush, and while it did remove some of the staining, the results of course are not the same bright white result you see on tv. Which I didn’t expect to achieve. Overall it did improve the colour of my teeth. I normally use a sensitive toothpaste, experienced no pain while using Colgate for a month.

After brushing my whole mouth felt really clean and fresh. I used the toothpaste morning and night I felt that I could see a reduction in coffee and tea stains on my teeth after around a week. I really liked this toothpaste because normally other whitening pastes have more of a gritty or chalky texture and this one didn't have that. The texture was like any normal toothpaste. I really liked it.
