If this route were made of bone, there wouldn’t be a problem, but all that soft tissue can be all too easily reshaped, particularly by the positioning of the tongue. That results in what should be a tunnel intermittently collapsing, but because it is fleshy and moist, air can still be dragged through. When it is, though, the flesh flaps around and that’s how they make the snoring noise.

The issue, then, is how to keep the fleshy route tunnel shaped.
