Causes of tooth discolouration - certain foods and beverages can cause teeth to become discoloured. These include coffee, tea and wine. Smoking also causes teeth to become discoloured.

Types of teeth stains:

Extrinsic Stains - an extrinsic tooth stain is a stain on the outer part of the tooth. These stains make their home on your enamel, which is the layer that protects the softer part of the tooth (dentine) underneath. Enamel comes into contact with everything you eat or drink and can adsorb some of the pigment over time, causing a stain.
Intrinsic Stains - intrinsic stains happen when pigments become incorporated in the enamel structure. Dentine is naturally darker and more yellow in colour than enamel. Dentine is more visible when enamel is thinned or worn down from abrasion, which can result from hard toothbrushing; or erosion, which can occur from the ingestion of acidic foods and drinks amongst other things.
Teeth whitening treatments - there are many at-home treatment options available including using a whitening toothpaste, mouthwash or whitening pen. Colgate Optic White toothpastes contain hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide works by removing extrinsic and intrinsic stains. Other whitening toothpastes use high cleaning silica, which helps to remove surface stains on the outer layer of the teeth.

Brush thoroughly at least twice a day or as directed by your dental professional.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Peter841 from Short term results, but nothing special [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After using it twice per day for more than three weeks, I didn’t really notice much difference from the beginning of the trial. Whilst it does give you an almost instant feel of cleanliness it doesn’t seem to last very long. On top of that the chemical taste that it leaves in your mouth after brushing is not really worth it compared to other whitening toothpastes on the market, that also leaving you with a fresh breath feeling. Even rinsing with water does not eliminate the taste, so you will need to use a strong mouthwash. Maybe this is why the whiteness doesn’t last as long on you would like.

My teeth are slightly whiter but i can get the same effect with white glo and or pearl drops whitening brands with NO sensitivity. During this trial, i also had my 6monthly teeth checkup which we noticed even my dentist that my gums seemed more sensitive than before. My tartar was less but my teeth are really not whiter than before the trial, overall i was disappointed as i would love to find a teeth whitening paste that Really Works, at a supermarket price

It fit neatly into my exisiting routine. I found that my breath was fresh after use and did not experience a dry mouth as I have with other whitening products. I experienced no sensitivity. I couldn’t say that I noticed a huge difference in terms of the whiteness if my teeth but I didn’t take before and after photos which would have been great to compare any changes.

My teeth felt clean and fresh throughout the day, even after I had eaten.I did find it a little harsh on sensitive teeth and would probably mix it up with a sensitive toothpaste at night. Also I found it helped with stains Packaging is excellent it stood proudly on my benchtop with the easy to see red for those mornings that your eyes just haven't adjusted to waking up yet. All up an excellent product that cleans teeth thoroughly and brightly.

After using twice a day for 4 weeks, I have not noticed much difference in the whiteness of my teeth at all. What I do like about this toothpaste is it has a really fresh minty flavour that is not overpowering. It foams up real well also without having to use much at all. I like the lid too, no fuss and no mess. I'm not sure I would buy this toothpaste again at its usual price, but would buy again if it was on a good sale.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was a little dubious about the effectiveness at the start to be honest. I have used various products in the past and had teeth whitening by a dental clinic which was effective but then went back to the old color fairly quickly. I never really saw a difference with other store bought products. This product is probably the most effective toothpaste product I have tried. It still didn’t get me to a shade where I can say “wow, amazing result” but I can tell that there is a difference.

I saw results within a few days, which was great. I did, however, find it disappointing that after this first improvement in colour and brightness, they didn't seem to get any whiter the longer I used the toothpaste, even with twice a day brushing for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, I still have some discoloration, my teeth aren't as white as I thought they would be by using this product.

As a heavy tea drinker I find that the toothpaste works great for my teeth to stop any stains from occurring and leaving my teeth nice and white between dental clean and whitenings. The taste of the toothpaste is not overpowering and is not overly foamy when using. The packaging is nice and bright and stands out on the shelf making it easy to find and the price point is I feel fair and accurate for the quality of the item and the size of the tube. This is an item that I will continue to purchase regularly and recommend to friends and family.
